In a recently held match between the Cincinnati Bengals and Seattle Seahawks, the Bengals beat Seahawks 34-12. While this unexpectedly large margin in scoring caused a furor amongst fans, many realized where the team went wrong only the next day in the newspapers. It is important for coaches to be excellent managers of the game clock, and that is where the Seahawks coach Carroll went miserably wrong. While many fans believed that Carroll?s decision to play Whitehurst was a bad decision, he had justified it by saying that he deserves another chance in starting off NFL games, and that the injured Tarvaris Jackson could do better with a little more rest. However, the plan backfired as Whitehurst barely proved to be as effective as thought.
Although Jackson received the extensive practice his fans hoped he could receive before he hit the turf, Carroll?s decision to rest him too long seemed a bad management strategy. Fans believe that since the more trusted player was ready to have a go earlier in the game, he should have replaced Whitehurst after he was tested in starting off. Although the press has not yet reported anything about partiality within the team, fans believe that the Whitehurst was completely unnecessary from the beginning, and that he got more than a fair chance. With less than three and a half minutes left, when Jackson had too much to cover, the Bengals had enough to rejoice many believe. That was the final chance Carroll had to bring on Jackson and he did not.
By the time Jackson came on, he had more than a 10-3 deficit to clear for the Seahawks. However, even Zach Miller was obstructed efficiently, and that seemed to prove the mistake a little too costly for the Seahawks. Many believe that bringing on Jackson earlier in the game could have helped Carroll?s team secure a lead that they missed and conceded to the Bengals. This can be a mistake to learn from many believe, but the truth remains that Carroll has made similar mistakes before. In spite of his earlier comments on correcting similar mismanagement, the defeat came inevitably as he never put his words into practice.
